Though there are nearly 1,200 community colleges in the U.S. representing some 13 million credit and non credit students and 45% of all undergraduates, promoting conflict resolution and peacebuilding efforts in these institutions is just beginning. With the publication of Peacebuilding in Community Colleges: A Teaching Resource (USIP Press 2013) new attention has been directed to this sector of higher education. Community colleges today are the most diverse learning environments with students of all ages, many cultural and ethnic groups, and holding a range of career and personal aspirations. Not surprising community colleges are frequently referred to as "democracy's colleges." Increasingly these students are seeking answers to important global issues and are looking at ways of contributing to a more peaceful world.
In this session, David J. Smith, editor of Peacebuilding in Community Colleges will discuss the work of community colleges and the important role they can play in promoting conflict resolution, peacebuilding and related strategies. He will discuss the lessons from his book, as well as provide insights into opportunities and challenges of working with community colleges.
