John M. Hammang
Dr. Hammang graduated in 2003 from George Mason University’s program for Conflict Analysis and Resolution; from the Detroit College of Law in 1978 and from the University of Detroit-Mercy in 1970. He has over 35 years of experience in higher education. This includes campus based positions in a community college, in a state comprehensive university, and at a national education association. He has worked in urban, rural, single campus and multi-campus environments. His experience in higher education includes personnel and labor relations, legal affairs, teaching, purchasing, computing, telecommunications, community relations and government relations. He has served on advisory councils to four campus presidents. Mr. Hammang has worked with presidents of AASCU member universities to strengthen and develop productive long term relationships with state elected and appointed officials who affect funding decisions for higher education. He has led national projects to review faculty policy, to assist member teacher preparation programs comply with the federal accountability reports, a national study of institutions with very high graduation rates and another of successful Hispanic serving institutions. He is the lead staff person for AASCU for the Voluntary System of Accountability’s (VSA) College Portrait and is an ex officio member of the VSA Oversight Board. He recently led the development of a survey instrument to systematically collect institution level data on student preparation for success in the workplace and preparation for civic engagement following graduation.
