BHU holds seminar on peacebuilding

VARANASI: The UNESCO Chair for Peace and Intercultural Understanding, Banaras Hindu University (BHU), in collaboration with the US-India Education Foundation, organised an international seminar at the Malaviya Centre for Peace Research on Monday.
Exploring conflict resolution strategies in global perspectives, Dr Ashild Kolas, a research professor from the Peace Research Institute in Oslo, Norway, took the students through various trends and theories in Peace Studies, including the Galtung and Hour Glass model and shared the analysis and thinking around peacebuilding in today's global context. Addressing the seminar, Dr Jeremy Rinker, a Fulbright-Nehru scholar and professor in the Guilford College in the US introduced students to the 'glocal' perspectives and innovative concepts of critical and creative reflective practices in conflict resolution that connect traditional and non-traditional understandings and narratives around peace building processes.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr Mohammad Gulrez, professor from the Aligarh Muslim University shared his experiences in South Africa and Rwanda and his analysis of truth and reconciliation processes as well as the successes and failures of conflict resolution approaches followed in these countries.
Presiding over the function, Prof Chandrakala Padia, Dean Faculty of Social Sciences, BHU, expressed appreciation for the speakers and asked the participants to be gender-sensitive and mindful of power dynamics while practicing peacebuilding in communities.
