Graduate students have a limited amount of time to complete their degree requirements. M.S. students must complete within 6 years. Ph.D. students have 6 years to complete the requirements for advancement to candidacy. Once advanced to candidacy they have 5 years to complete the dissertation. Students will not be allowed to graduate if they are beyond these time limits without an extension approved by the Vice Provost for Graduate Education.
Students seeking an extension make a request (via email) to the Dean with a detailed outline of their work plan to complete their requirements. This request should be cc’d to the appropriate program director, and their dissertation/thesis committee members if applicable. In the email they should ask the program director and committee members to respond to the Dean with their support/non-support for the request and any concerns.
If the request is supported and the dean approves, student services staff will draft the extension letter for the Dean’s signature. Once signed by the Dean it is sent to the Vice-Provost and logged in the Vice-Provost log. When it returns approved it should be scanned and emailed to the student, the program director and dissertation/thesis chair. It should also be faxed to the Registrar’s office and then placed in the students file.
