S-CAR Graduate Scholarships

Scholarships for S-CAR Graduate Students

All S-CAR graduate students may apply to the following scholarships. Interested Students may apply to more than one, but must apply to each one using the application link under the scholarship description.  Priority consideration deadline for the 2017-2018 academic year is May 1, 2017.

Alumni Scholarship

  • The award will be made to a returning graduate student at S-CAR.
  • The award will be made to a student based on the student's academic achievements during the previous year(s) and his or her promise as a contributor to the field of conflict analysis and resolution.
  • The applicant shows commitment to the S-CAR community and can identify how they will contribute as an alumnus.

John Burton Scholarship

  • This scholarship goes to a student who has exhibited excellence in academics as well as an emphasis on understanding the role of human needs in promoting conflict.
  • The winner exhibits Burton’s emphasis on collaborative problems solving across conflict divides and keeps the spirit of John Burton’s work alive at S-CAR

Joan Shapiro Scholarship

  • The Joan Shapiro scholarship is available for full or part-time graduate students to assist with costs related to an applied research project. 
  • Students will be asked to submit the final report on their project as part of an archive of projects supported by the Shapiro scholarship.
  • Students will be chosen based on academic performance and the quality of the proposed applied research project.

Wallace Warfield Scholarship

  • This scholarship will support students conducting fieldwork, a practicum or internship in Conflict Analysis and Resolution. Recipients will be chosen based on financial need and academic merit; quality of the design of the practice project and applicability to the field of Conflict Analysis and Resolution; and the proposed project's potential for benefit to the external community.
  • All S-CAR graduate students, full or part-time, may apply.

The Benjamin and Edith Avruch Scholarship Endowment

  • This fund provides scholarship support to graduate students who are working on issues related to, and the prevention of, genocide, mass atrocities, state-sponsored violence against ethnic or religious minorities, refugees, or war.
  • All S-CAR graduate students, full or part-time, may apply.

Scholarships Awarded to Students by Faculty Nomination ONLY

Mary Lynn Boland Award for Outstanding Student Service Criteria:

  • This award is given annually to a student who has made an outstanding contribution to the School for Conflict Analysis and Resolution and its academic program in terms of time, involvement, dedication, and service. 
  • The award winners are individuals who excel at collaborative problem solving, whose contributions to the S-CAR community have enriched the School and those surrounding them.

James H. Laue Memorial Endowed Scholarship Fund
In the memory of James H. Laue and his dedication and service to the field of education and in particular, S-CAR.

  •  Graduate student in the MS or PhD program from groups and categories under-represented both in the field at large and in the S-CAR program and/or,
  •  Awarded to student who is likely to carry on work in an area or a topic that would represent a continuation of the work of James H. Laue

Brenda Rubenstein Award

  • The award will be made to a rising second year Master's student based on the student's academic achievements during the first year and his or her promise as a contributor to the field of conflict analysis and resolution.

Faculty Scholarship

  • The award should be made to a returning graduate student at S-CAR.
  • The award will be made to a student based on the student's academic achievements during the previous year(s) and his or her promise as a contributor to the field of conflict analysis and resolution.
