Abstract
The study of identity in general and ethnic identity in particular has focused on social categorization, ingroup / outgroup perception, as well as group behavior and interaction to explain how conflict and violence happen. Little has been done to explore how to prevent ethnic conflicts or the escalation of violence in our communities through identity work in Burundi. More specifically, the study of identity shift that people or groups may go through has not been researched extensively. This action research explores how people shift their ethnic identity and how that shift impacts the perception of one another. It is argued then that ethnic identity can be the outcome of a well-conceived strategy that has put together a set of factors and created a certain environment for the sole purpose of producing such kind of ethnic identity.
