Building up Civil Society to Lead a Peace Process:
A Case Study of the Naga People in India and Burma, Seeking to End a 6-Decade Violent Conflict

Join the Center for Peacemaking Practice in welcoming Rev. Dr. Daniel Buttry, for a presentation and discussion on his work in mediation and a civil-society driven peace process among the Naga people of Northeast India and Northwest Burma/Myanmar. Dr. Buttry has been working with Naga civil society groups since 1996 to end a conflict between the Nagas and the government of India that since 1955 has been one of the most violent hidden conflicts in the world. He frequently travels to Asia to conduct conflict transformation training with Nagas, to train insurgent leaders in how to enter into negotiations about their political issues rather than pursuing violent means to attain their goals, and to participate directly in mediation processes. He will especially explore empowering civil society groups to become leaders in transforming conflicts.
